Earth’s first known superhero is Captain Steven Grant “Steve” Rogers, a
World War II veteran who also founded the Avengers. Rogers had a number
of health issues as a child, and after making many efforts to serve in
the United States Army after the country entered World War II, he was
turned down. The Super Soldier Serum created by Abraham Erskine under
the Strategic Scientific Reserve was given only to Rogers as part of
Project Rebirth, for which he eventually volunteered. Rogers’ physical
prowess was substantially elevated to superhuman levels by the serum.
After Erskine’s murder, Rogers was forced to work in war bond campaigns
where he pretended to be a patriotic mascot by using the name Captain
America after being questioned by SSR chief director Chester Phillips.
