The Joker is a supervillian and Batman’s archenemy. He was first
introduced in Batman #1 (Spring 1940), when he was a cunning criminal
genius. A regular foe of the Dark Knight and Robin, the Boy Wonder,
Joker was originally scheduled to make a one-time appearance, but his
instantaneous popularity insured that he would do so. The Joker
developed a new identity as a harmless practical joker by the late
1940s. After fading into oblivion by the 1960s, he was reintroduced as
one of Gotham City’s most notorious villains and a more serious menace
in the 1970s.
